Letter part one

My dearest sister Jocasta,

I want you to know that I have no intention to over throw Oedipus and take the throne. I already have all the power I want, and I have no desire to take on the responsibilities that a king has to deal with. I am content with the power I get as the queen's brother.

Could you please explain to your husband that I am not plotting against him with the blind prophet, Teiresias? Oedipus and I have been friends for a long time, and I hope to keep it that way. I would also like to let him know that Teiresias has always been an honorable man and has no reason to commit treason. He did not want to tell Oedipus about what he foretold, but Oedipus insisted that Teiresias tell anyway. Oedipus didn’t take into consideration that they were in front of the people of Thebes. Then he rants on about how I and Teiresias are plotting against him.

I would also like you to know that I did not accuse of him of murdering the previous king, Lauis. I believe the true murderer will be found, and cast out of the city. I do not know whether it is Oedipus or not. Oedipus has always kept the interest of Thebes in mind, and I know he will do whatever needs to be done in order to lift the Gods' curse on our city.

When Oedipus has calmed down and starts to think rationally again, please let me know. I will help him discover the truth of King Lauis's murder. We can also discuss what the prophet Teiresias meant by how Oedipus is the murderer and what wrong he did to his parents. I will forgive him for accusing me of treason, and I will continue to support him as his second in command. Together, the king and I will find the murderer and save the city of Thebes.

Love your brother,
Creon
